Three arrested on weapons charges in Elgin

Three Elgin residents faced various weapons charges after Elgin Police raided their Prospect Drive home, authorities said.

Members of the Elgin Police Department Tactical Response Team executed a search warrant in the 900 block of Prospect Avenue on Sunday after the Carpentersville Police Department Investigations Unit provided a tip that numerous stolen guns were located in the home, authorities said.

Police entered the home shortly before 1 a.m., and several people inside the home were known gang members from Elgin and Carpentersville, authorities said in a news release Wednesday.

A search of the residence resulted in the recovery of six firearms and numerous rounds of ammunition, authorities said.

Five of the firearms were determined to have been stolen from a previous burglary in Carpentersville, authorities said, while the sixth was stolen out of North Carolina. Timothy Salinas, 23, Ruben Munoz, 30, and Lizabeth Acosta, 24, all living in the 900 block of Prospect, were charged.

Salinas was charged with unlawful possession of weapon by felon, possession of a weapon without a Firearm Owners Identification card and unlawful contact with a known street gang member; Munoz was charged with unlawful use of weapon and possession of a weapon without a FOID card; and Acosta was charged with resisting a peace officer, authorities say.

Salinas and Munoz remain in custody at the Kane County jail, but Acosta was released after posting bond, authorities said.

Additional charges may be forthcoming against other occupants of the residence, authorities said, and the case is still under investigation.

“Through joint cooperation from the Carpentersville Police Department and Elgin Police Department we are committed to attacking street gangs in the Elgin area,” Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said. “This is yet another demonstration of our resolve to combat these gangs.”
