Nykiel, Wengerski power Maine West

Maine West junior pitcher Tara Nykiel won her second five-inning game in three days as the Warriors topped host Highland Park 19-1 on Thursday.

Nykiel (3-3), who received a 14-0 lead after two innings, tossed a 4-hitter as the Warriors improved to 10-6 and 2-0 in the Central Suburban North.

Warriors junior Holly Wengerski, sidelined since the first game of the season with mononucleosis, returned Thursday and went 3-for-4 with 3 runs and 4 RBI.

Other top hitters for West were Katie Fitzgerald (3-for-5, 2 runs, 4 RBI), Brie Montmarquette (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 doubles) and Gina Larucci (3-for-5, 2 runs).

“It was another great offensive effort and another great pitching performance from Tara,” said Warriors coach Amy Gonzales, whose team defeated Maine East 23-1 on Tuesday.

Glenbard North 8, Schaumburg 0: Dana Giannelli (1-for-2) and Kirsten Safley (1-for-2) had the only hits for host Schaumburg (6-4) in the nonconference game.
