Prison time possible for man guilty of 5th DUI in South Elgin

A Westchester man who was arrested last summer in South Elgin in a stolen car with his two nephews in the back seat pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI Friday as well as driving while his license was suspended or revoked 10 or more times, according to court records.

Tommy J. Droulias, 41, of the 10800 block of Windsor Drive, faces up to 15 years in prison for the most serious felony — that he was arrested on charges of DUI and had four previous DUI convictions, records show.

Kane County Judge Marmarie J. Kostelny accepted the guilty plea.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped several other charges, such as possession of a stolen car, aggravated battery to a police officer, open alcohol and two counts of endangering the life of a child.

South Elgin police arrested Droulias in the parking lot of a shopping mall on the 300 block of Randall Road the night of July 9, 2011.

Police said an officer pulled Droulias over after Droulias he struck the squad car with a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix. A check on the car showed it was reported stolen out of Chicago, and Droulias told officers he had too much to drink. Officers also saw two boys — ages 10 and 12 at the time — in the back seat without their seat belts on.

Droulias also was accused of fighting with officers at the station, kneeing one of them in the elbow in an attempt to knee another officer in the head.
