Author Kenneth N. Green tells of comeback

Author, attorney and boxer Kenneth N. Green was kicked out of Roosevelt High School 58 years ago. A half-year later, he was allowed to return and finally graduated after four and one half years. He made a comeback after graduating from Roosevelt.

His book, “I’m From Division Street,” tells how he rebounded from poverty and academic problems growing up in Humboldt Park to his success as a defense attorney, chief of public defenders in Los Angeles County, a boxer inducted into the California Hall of Fame and single parent of a son.

He currently resides in Sherman Oaks, Calif., and has a residence in Chicago, when he visits his hometown and old neighborhood about four times a year.

Kenneth N. Green will discuss and personally sign copies of his book, “I’m From Division Street” at Chicago area venues during May. He will speak about his book at a fundraiser for Northbrook Community Synagogue, 2548 Jasper Court (corner of Willow and Landwehr Roads.) in Northbrook, on Thursday, May 17. The program will begin at 8 p.m. following the 7:30 p.m. minyan. Refreshments will be served after the program. Adults and teenagers are invited to attend. R.S.V.P. to (847) 509-9204. Two members of the synagogue will match the total sales of “I’m From Division Street” for this synagogue fundraiser.

He will also present a program and sign copies of his book at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Congregation Shaare Tikvah/B’nai Zion, 3500 W. Peterson Ave., Chicago. The community is invited. For information, call (773) 539-2202.
