Rockford Boylan outlasts Cary-Grove

Playing a tough early season nonconference schedule, Cary-Grove girls soccer coach Ray Krystal doesn’t concern himself with wins and losses. He just wants to see his team improve and prepare for Fox Valley Conference and postseason play.

So, even after visiting Rockford Boylan defeated the host Trojans 2-1 Friday night, Krystal still likes the progress of his team.

“We play good nonconference teams to get better as a team,” said Krystal. “The great competition strengthens us a team. Boylan is a very strong team and we did a lot of good things tonight. We are still learning our roles. Once we do we should have a very good team.”

Despite being out shot 12-3, Cary-Grove hung with the Titans throughout the entire game.

Trojan senior goalkeeper Paige Lincicum, who will play collegiately at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, kept Cary-Grove within striking distance with 6 saves.

Cary-Grove, which went a little over 34 minutes without a shot on Boylan sophomore goalie Sarah Dobrowolski, scored on its first attempt of the game. Korey Kronforst scored off a perfect lead pass from Sierra Romero with 5:54 left in the first half to give Cary-Grove a 1-0 lead. Kronforst, who broke away from the Titan defense, pushed the ball past Dobrowolski to give Cary-Grove a 1-goal advantage.

Boylan (2-0) tied the game when Sydney Rumple scored on a penalty kick with 1:55 left before intermission.

Neither team could score in the second half until Boylan’s Abby Reed hit the game-winner off a feed from Emma Krahmer with 15:12 remaining in the game.

Boylan threatened to take a 2-goal advantage when Reed broke behind the Cary-Grove defense for a clear shot from 5 yards out on Lincicum with 9:15 left in the game. The Trojan senior goalkeeper was able to get her body in front of Reed’s shot in making a spectacular save.

“We have a great history with Cary-Grove,” said Boylan coach Mark Couper. “Win, lose or draw we always have a good hard-fought game with Cary-Grove. Though it was early in the season this was like a playoff atmosphere. We got plenty of shots and I would like us to finish better. That will come. We just need to be patient.”
