Investigations of tollway theft continue

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Tollway Inspector General is cracking down on employee theft and misconduct.

Ten investigations resulted in disciplined employees for theft of toll payments or misconduct. Eight of those employees have resigned or been fired.

Cases that qualify will be sent to the appropriate state’s attorney for criminal prosecution.

The investigations have resulted in more than $32,000 returned to the agency.

Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur says that number will grow with the continuing investigations.

Authorities say the Illinois Tollway’s Office of the Inspector General handled almost 200 cases in the last six months. About half are new cases and the rest were cases it was able to close.
