The Soapbox

Your vote does matter:

We know lots of people don't like to have to ask for a Republican or Democratic ballot at primary time, but your votes do matter. There still are three delegates to be awarded from downstate Illinois, but the delegate tallies are so close, absentee and other mailed ballots will determine which GOP presidential candidate wins those delegates.

Thanks to winners and losers:

And a round of applause to everyone who stepped up to run for office, whether you won or not. Running for office is not an easy task. You should be commended for the time, energy and heartfelt dedication you put into the goal of serving your community.

Fuel for thought:

As the price of gasoline gets higher and higher, so does the complaining about the prices. But why do so many people refuse to do things to conserve even a tiny amount of petrol? So many jack-rabbit starts at stop lights. So many racing to an intersection. So many flying by at speeds well above the limit. If you waste it, why complain about how much it costs?

What losing streak?

Remember all the angst when the Blackhawks were troubled with that long losing streak? All the talk was this team wasn't tough enough to compete, and now a win streak with Jonathan Toews out with a concussion has them firmly in the playoff race again. Nice turnaround.

Grabbing headlines:

While Naperville's Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints grabbed most of the NFL headlines this week, another NFL coach with suburban ties made some news as well. Seems brash, bold and always confident New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, who hails from Stevenson High, is Tim Tebow's new coach. That should be interesting.

Saving dough:

No matter what you think about Michael Hogan's resignation as U of I president, one thing's for sure: At least U of I won't have to give him a buyout; the university is already paying three coaches big bucks not to coach.

Spring fever in suburbs:

There's always much ado about spring training for the pro teams, but we're even more excited to see our suburban high school sports teams take to the fields and courts again. Now, it's springtime. Good luck to all!

Not all sunshine, though:

Overheard at an area eye care store this week: An independent snowplow driver lamenting the lack of snow this season and wondering how he was going to pay for his new truck. How many other suburban businesses are feeling the pain of an easy winter while the rest of us bask in unseasonal sunshine? What happened to “to everything there is a season?”

No winner from 53 candidates:

At first, it's easy to say, “Huh?” when you hear the village of Lombard screened 53 applicants for the fire chief's job without finding one leaders viewed as good enough for the job. But they vow — time-consuming as it may be — to cast a wider net for applicants and make sure they find a candidate who'll be successful. Probably worth the effort.

Milestone:

Congratulations to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Round Lake, which celebrates its 100th birthday today. Cardinal Francis George will be the main celebrant for a Mass today. Here's to another century for the parish and the families and community it serves.

Simon to chair lieutenant governor’s association
