Castro secures Democratic nomination in Kane District 20

Incumbent Cristina Castro will get to continue her fight for a second term on the Kane County Board.

With all precincts counting, Castro, 34, secured the Democratic nomination by a landslide with 529 votes. Challengers Penny Wegman and Jose Sifuentes had 120 votes and 29 votes respectively.

“I worked very hard, knocked on every door and I do fight for my constituents and I work hard to represent them well,” Castro said. “Many felt I did a very good job and deserve another term.”

Castro works in the marketing department at Elgin Community College and Wegman, 36, is a student loan coordinator for Career Education Corp. Sifuentes has not responded to interview requests.

During the race, Wegman criticized Castro for attending only 75 percent of meetings in her first term and vowed to have perfect attendance. Castro said her work demands sometimes kept her from attending.

The 20th District includes portions of eastern Elgin.
