No to Fox River Grove sales tax hike

Voters in Fox River Grove will be asked to support an increase in the sales tax of a quarter percentage point to 7.25 percent to help spur economic growth in the village. Officials anticipate the measure generating another $100,000 a year to make improvements to the business districts. We supported Sleepy Hollow’s request to raise its rate a quarter percentage point to 7.75 percent in November 2010 and voters rejected it. There was more on the line then in Sleepy Hollow, too. We view Fox River Grove’s plan as a look to the future; nothing will fall apart in the meantime if this doesn’t pass. And while the economy is showing signs of improvement, we’re not out of the woods yet. This may come across as nickel and diming residents to death, and we feel the village should wait until the economy is on stronger legs before this is approved. We recommend a no vote.
