Do you support continuing the effort to acquire County Lakes Golf Club in Naperville? Why or why not?
The people in the area surrounding Country Lakes Golf Course need publically owned open space. As a quality of life issue it is important to consider any and all acquisitions seriously. We (the Commission)have to weigh and measure the financial implications of continuing the aquisition effort with the value provided to our citizens. At this point we have spent a significant amount of money in pursuit of the property and must balance anticipated costs with those we have incurred.
Should the district be in the golf course business' If so, please explain the benefit. If not, please detail why. Should the district consider selling any of its holdings'
Yes and no. In some urban areas the only open space is Golf courses and in our enabling legislation we are to provide recreation as well as conservation and education. Our golf coarses also provide significant storm water retention in times of flooding thereby giving the citizens several benefits from golf properties. Should we build new golf coarses or be actively involved in seeking out additional coarses' No we should do the most with what we have.
Comment on the forest preserve's current land acquisition policy: Too aggressive? Too passive? Just right?
It's very good. Very seldom does the District utilize its power of eminent domain. The District is very judicous in its prioritization and selection process of those parcels that are ecologically or socially important.
