Aurora woman charged in 2-year-old’s drowning turns herself in

The woman charged last week in the August drowning death of a 2-year-old in Aurora has turned herself in to police, authorities said Tuesday.

Tracy Kennedy, 37, of the 2700 block of Squaw Valley Trail in Aurora, turned herself in to Aurora police Monday, spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.

She posted $5,000 — 10 percent of her $50,000 bond — and is due to appear at 9 a.m. Feb. 23 in Will County court.

Kennedy was charged Thursday by the Will County state’s attorney’s office with child endangerment and operating a child care facility without a license.

The charges stem from the Aug. 2 death of 2-year-old Abigail Holland of Aurora, who drowned in Kennedy’s aboveground backyard pool while under Kennedy’s watch.

Records from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services show Kennedy had been warned about pool safety and told she needed to stop offering day care for children in her home because she did not have a license to provide such care.

If convicted of both charges, Kennedy could face up to 11 years in prison and up to $2,500 in fines.
