Marketing director named interim director of Batavia parks

The Batavia park board Tuesday night put its marketing and public relations director in charge of the district.

Allison Niemela, a 12-year employee, will be interim director.

Former executive director Mike Clark recently submitted his resignation to become the executive director of the Palatine Park District. His last day in Batavia is Jan. 31.

Niemela could serve four to six months or longer, according to board president Pat Callahan.

He said the board will first evaluate the district's operations and the community's needs, then look for a permanent director.

“The board knows Allison's skill sets and dedication to the Batavia Park District, and believe she is the right choice to help manage this transition,” Callahan said in a prepared statement.

Niemela will focus on current projects, including a strategic master plan, the community needs assessment and revamping the district's website.

“I am honored and delighted to have the opportunity to take on this leadership role,” Niemela said. “One of my top priorities will be to create open and effective communication among all stakeholders, continuing the district on its path to being an efficient, effective and responsive governmental entity for our constituents.”

Niemela is the chairman-elect of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. She also worked part-time for five years on the IncrediBulls entertainment team for the Chicago Bulls, conducting contests and sponsors' events during games.
