40-year sentence in Aurora kidnapping, beating

An Aurora man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Wednesday for kidnapping his neighbor, beating her with a shotgun, and forcing her to eat dog feces.

A jury convicted Jean Marc Faison, 26, of the 200 block of Trask Street, of a host of charges in the Nov. 20, 2010, attack, including attempted murder while armed with a gun, aggravated kidnapping, armed violence, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, unlawful restraint and possession of a weapon by a felon.

He faced up to 45 years in prison after a jury convicted him in September 2011. Faison, who asked Kane County Judge Karen Simpson to “show mercy” but never really apologized, must serve 85 percent of his sentence, which comes to 34 years.

Simpson cited Faison's lengthy criminal record, which started when he was 14 and included weapons charges, domestic battery and drug possession.

“There's no question about the fact that the victim in this case suffered some serious injuries,” Simpson said.

Faison, co-defendant Monserrat B. Arreola, 25, of Romeoville, and the victim were at the victim's house in Aurora when Arreola attacked the victim for an unknown reason, authorities said.

Faison and Arreola are accused of forcing the woman into the basement where Faison held a shotgun to the victim's face while he and Arreola punched and kicked her. At one point, the woman was forced to eat dog feces, prosecutors said.

Faison then dragged the woman upstairs and outside to where the victim saw Faison's car in driveway with the trunk open. The victim feared they were going to kill her and she escaped and ran to a neighbor's house when Faison was distracted, authorities said.

Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon called the sentence appropriate. “This was a disturbing case, and this defendant clearly is a danger to society. His actions show a complete lack of respect for human dignity,” McMahon said.

Arreola is due in court Feb. 16 and was being held on $75,000 bail.
