Rock Island's Sara Lee plant to close in 2012

ROCK ISLAND — The Sara Lee bakery in Rock Island is slated to close by the end of the year, putting about 100 people out of work.

The plant is operated by Bimbo Bakeries U.S.A. A company spokesman says the Rock Island plant is getting old and the company has more efficient plants that can handle the baking now done in Rock Island.

Officials with the city of Rock Island say they plan to ask the company to reconsider and they're asking whether the Rock Island bakery could be modernized.

The company says about 10 jobs will be eliminated when the bun line closes next Tuesday. Bread production will be phased out later in the year.

The company spokesman says human resources representatives will meet with employees to discuss severance and other benefits.
