Teen injured in McHenry hit-and-run

An 18-year-old girl remains in serious but stable condition at a McHenry hospital after being injured in a hit-and-run crash as she was crossing a McHenry roadway Wednesday night, according to fire officials.

McHenry Deputy Police Chief John Birk said Thursday the girl was crossing the intersection of in the 4400 block of W. Elm Street when she was struck by a vehicle about 6:30 p.m.

The woman was treated at the scene then rushed to Centegra Hospital — McHenry, where she is currently listed to be in serious but stable condition, Birk said.

Burk said witnesses at the scene said the victim was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on Elm Street as she was crossing the road, then the vehicle fled the scene without stopping.

The McHenry Police Department's Critical Accident Investigation Team met up with detectives to investigate the accident, where the name of the driver of the vehicle was uncovered.

Birk said detectives contacted Jesse A. Williams, 30, of the 4000 block of W. Lillian Street in McHenry regarding the accident, and 90 minutes later, he turned himself into police.

Williams was interviewed and charged with one count of driving while his license was suspended, and one count of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

His car was also located at the McHenry West Beach Park, Birk said, and was impounded for evidence.

Williams was taken to the McHenry County jail where he is awaiting bond hearing later Thursday morning.

Birk said the investigation is continuing and that additional charges may be filed pending the outcome of drug and alcohol testing.

He said the roadway was shut down while police investigated Wednesday night, but was reopened about two hours later.
