After the Apollo 11 crew made their mission to the moon in 1969, park officials in Carol Stream decided to recognize them by naming a park, community center and swimming pool in their honor. The crew, from left, was made up of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins.

President Barack Obama greeted Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and Neil Armstrong in July of 2009 at the White House on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Armstrong Park, the Aldrin Community Center and Collins Pool in Carol Stream were named after the crew.

Carol Stream Park District officially will close its 41-year-old Aldrin Community Center to the public in Friday in preparation for the building's demolition early next year. The park district's offices temporarily will move to a historic house near the site of Carol Stream's new recreation center.
