Itasca’s Santa tradition connects community
Fewer than 10 years ago, Itasca officials decided to welcome Santa a little early in December with a community event called “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”
And now the event, which returns Tuesday, has become a beloved tradition for both children and adults.
Village President Jeff Pruyn said the holiday celebration’s popularity stems from the sense of togetherness it creates.
“It’s become a nice tradition where everyone comes together for the holiday and feels a sense of community,” Pruyn said.
Organizers anticipate about 500 children and adults will attend, and they can start their night at the library by making holiday crafts to take home or to give to veterans. The library will also feature several Christmas trees decorated by community organizations such as the Itasca Lions Club.
The main event will happen at 6 p.m., when Santa arrives to visit with children.
But children shouldn’t only think about sharing their gift wishes with Santa. They can give gifts, too, because the Itasca Police Department will accept donations of new, unwrapped toys that will be donated to local families in need. In addition, the village is collecting winter wear for all ages, and the Itasca Food Pantry seeks food and nonperishable donations.
In exchange, all families that attend will receive a commemorative ornament while supplies last.
Tuesday’s event is part of a monthlong series of holiday offerings at the library and park district dubbed “Celebrate the Community.” Events include a ride on the Polar Express, Santa’s Workshop and a holiday house decorating contest.
Information on other events happening throughout the month are available at itascalibrary.org and itasca.com. .
