Johnny B returns to Chicago's airwaves

Longtime Chicago radio personality Jonathon Brandmeier will return to the airwaves next week as the new morning host on WGN Radio, the station announced Friday.

“Johnny B” replaces Greg Jarrett, who was released from the station after two-and-a-half years.

“Johnny's high energy, humor and unique Chicago experience make him an exceptional fit as ‘The Voice of Chicago' evolves with another generation of listeners,” said Tom Langmeyer, the station's vice president and general manager, in a statement.

Brandmeier will start his new show Dec. 9, from 5:30 to 9 a.m.

He hosted the morning show on “The Loop,” WLUP-FM, from 1983 to 1997, and had a shorter stint there that ended in 2009. He will now sit in the WGN morning drive chair once occupied by the likes of Wally Phillips, Bob Collins and Spike O'Dell.

During a segment with WGN afternoon host Garry Meier on Friday, Brandmeier recalled an appearance he did on Phillips' show.

“I heard the king do his magic,” Brandmeier said of Phillips.

The station also announced Friday that news anchor Steve Bertrand will move to mornings with Brandmeier, and Bill Leff will host a morning drive lead-in show from 5 to 5:30 a.m.

Brandmeier, 55, a native of Fond du Lac, Wis., has received the Marconi Award for Major Market Personality of the Year. He's also known for performing with his band, Johnny and the Leisure Suits.
