2 alumni give $5 million to Lawrence University

APPLETON, Wis. — Two Lawrence University alumni have given $5 million to their alma mater, and the Appleton school is using the money to establish a film-studies center.

The gift is from graduates Tom and Julie Hurvis. The gift will be used to establish The Hurvis Center for Interdisciplinary Film Studies.

The school says the new center will help expand its current film curriculum. Lawrence President Jill Beck on Wednesday said the school’s students already learn to “read” film, and now they’ll learn to “write” it as well.

Tom Hurvis graduated from Lawrence in 1960, and Julie graduated the following year. The couple co-produced the 2009 film “The Providence Effect,” a documentary that chronicles a man’s efforts to transform a gang-infested Chicago school into a top-ranked college-preparatory school.
