Elgin police: Marijuana smell from home led to drug bust

An Elgin man was charged Wednesday night with production and possession of marijuana with intent to sell after neighbors reported smelling the plant's odor coming from his home, authorities said.

Cortney Forrester, 33, of the 700 block of Logan Avenue, was arrested after police executed a search warrant and found more than 150 marijuana plants in the basement of his home, police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said Thursday.

Police also confiscated about 130 grams of processed marijuana with a street value of nearly $4,000, plus four rifles and three handguns, according to a news release. Forrester had a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card.

“We were able to make an arrest because of the community's willingness to report suspected drug activity,” Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said. “We encourage all residents to come forward when they see suspicious activity — no matter what it is.”

Neighbors had also reported seeing what they believed to be the selling of drugs because of “increased comings and goings” of people at the house, Olafson said.

Forrester's bail was set at $75,000, and he posted $7,500 bond Thursday and was released. He is due in Kane County court Nov. 28.
