Tablet purchase defies economy

Let's see if I've got this straight: The assessed valuation of my home has fallen over $8,000 in the past year while my property taxes have risen more than $1,000. High School District 214 gets about 25 percent of my annual tax bill. High School District 214 now wants to supply each of its 12,000 students with iPads, the cheapest of which cost about $400. That totals $4,800,000 (that's four million eight hundred thousand dollars!). Given the state of our economy, I must assume that whoever at District 214 hatched this plan is oblivious to our economic realities, is supremely ignorant, or has taken leave of his or her senses.
