Day care death trial should start today

Naperville to quit using red-light cameras

Naperville City Council members, in a surprise move, Tuesday decided to remove the city's red-light cameras when they declined to pick up an optional fourth year on their contract. “It seems to me the red-light camera at North Aurora and 34 is costing us money,” said Councilman Steve Chirico. NIU wins a wild one

Chandler Harnish's TD pass with 19 seconds left gave Northern Illinois a 63-60 win over Toledo last night. It was the second-highest-scoring game in Mid-American Conference history, with a record 17 touchdowns. Harnish threw for six of them. Full story.

Judges rake in big pensions

Almost 40 percent of the 715 retired Illinois judges are using multiple public pensions to boost their lucrative judicial retirement benefits. That includes 43 who use three public pensions. Thanks to a loophole in the state's pension law, some judges who spent less than six years on the bench qualify for judicial pensions, as well, Suburban Tax Watchdog Jake Griffin reports. Youth minister facing child exploitation charges

A Marengo church youth minister has been charged after police say he attempted to solicit an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old girl for sex acts. Barry Caudle, a 39-year-old youth minister at Marengo First Assembly of God, is being held at the McHenry County jail in lieu of $150,000 bail. Full story.

Mother sues tobacco shop after son's death

An Aurora mother whose son died in a high-speed crash after smoking synthetic marijuana is suing the tobacco shop accused of selling him the “unreasonably dangerous” product. Max Dobner ran a stop sign in North Aurora and crashed into a house on June 14. Max called his brother saying he smoked the “legal stuff” and was having symptoms consistent with a panic attack before the crash. Full story.

Crystal Lake man indicted in major Ponzi scheme

A former Crystal Lake man has been charged as a new defendant in a Ponzi scheme case involving $104 million in investments from more than 400 victims. Alfred Gerebizza, 56, now joins co-defendant Daniel Spitzer, 51, of Barrington to face charges in the scheme that authorities say caused losses of approximately $34 million. Full story.

Traffic

Roads are clear in the early morning hours. Construction is taking place in the right lane on I-290 outbound past Route 64/North Avenue to the York Road off ramp. Construction on the Route 20/Lake Street off ramp on I-290 begins today. The exit to westbound Route 20 is scheduled to be closed until Nov. 23, and motorists are advised to use the southbound York Road detour to get to Route 20. Full traffic.

Epstein brings in old friends to help shape Cubs

Theo Epstein officially announced the Cubs' new management hires yesterday in hopes of bringing the chemistry back from their days of building the Boston Red Sox into two-time world champions. Epstein brough in Jed Hoyer as the team's new G.M. from the San Diego Padres, where he was G.M. for the past two seasons. Jason McLeod was named senior vice president of scouting and player development. “In my opinion, he's as dynamic an operator at the major league level as there is in the game,” Epstein said of Hoyer. Bears at full strength heading into prime-time matchup

The Bears, who weathered the early season storm of injuries better than expected, are back to full strength heading into Monday night's matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. Rookie offensive right tackle Gabe Carimi and wide receiver Earl Bennett will be active in Philadelphia for the first time since Week 2, but the question remains where they will fit into the Bears' scheme. “This is the group we started the season with; that we wanted to win football games with,” said head coach Lovie Smith.
