A 7-pound newborn baby was dropped off in a bag on a vehicle in the parking lot of a Schaumburg church Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Members of the Gospel Presbyterian Church, 219 S. Plum Grove Road, were returning to their vehicle in the church parking lot and found a green, recyclable, grocery-style bag on their car, according to police.

The church members found a teddy bear and a towel and while bringing the bag back into the church, heard a noise from inside the bag and discovered the baby, police said.

The newborn baby is an Asian girl weighing 7 pounds and appears to be a few days old, according to police. Hospital officials said the baby did not appear to have been born in a hospital, citing the length of the unclamped umbilical cord.

The baby, who was found at approximately 2:12 p.m., appeared to be in good health and it appears she was carried to full term, according to police.

The girl was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will take custody of the baby once she has been medically cleared and released from the hospital, according to police.

Anyone with information about the baby or her mother is asked to call Schaumburg police at (847) 882-3534.
