Carol Stream man charged in wife’s stabbing

A Carol Stream man repeatedly stabbed his wife after he returned home and found his belongings packed up by the door, prosecutors said Thursday.

Clifford Bolden, 35, was charged with aggravated domestic battery and ordered held on $750,000 bail.

Prosecutors said Bolden and his wife began arguing early Wednesday at their apartment on the 600 block of East Gundersen Drive. Bolden left at some point, authorities said, but returned about 6:30 a.m. to find his clothes and other belongings had been packed and placed by the door.

Assistant State’s Attorney Nick Catizone said Bolden resumed arguing with his wife, 42, and then stabbed her at least twice in the face and chest. She underwent surgery at Central DuPage Hospital, where she was in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

“She lost a lot of blood,” Catizone told DuPage County Judge Liam Brennan in bond court.

Two of the victim’s three sons, ages 15 and 17, were home at the time of the attack and saw Bolden run off with a knife, Catizone said. He said the investigation was ongoing, with authorities looking into possible additional charges.

In court Thursday, Bolden denied he was the aggressor.

“She stabbed me and I defended myself,” he told the judge.

Bolden was ordered to have no contact with the victim and her sons should he post the necessary $75,000 bond to be released. He also must wear a device that monitors his whereabouts.

Bolden’s criminal record includes vehicular hijacking, prosecutors said, and he is also registered as a sexual predator in Illinois. Records show he was convicted of sexually abusing a minor between the ages of 13 and 16 in Cook County when he was 22.

Bolden’s next court date is Nov. 14. Police could not immediately be reached for further details.
