BB gun gets Glenbard West student in trouble

A 14-year-old Glenbard West student faces possible charges as well as “strict disciplinary measures” after bringing a BB gun into a high school locker room last weekend, authorities said Thursday.

School administrators were made aware of the situation through the course of an investigation Thursday, Principal Jane Thorsen said in a letter to parents.

“We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness,” Thorsen wrote. “Possession, sale, use or transfer of any firearm, knife, ‘look alike’ or other object which may be reasonably considered to be a weapon is clearly outlined as prohibited student conduct in our school board policy.”

The BB gun was recovered at the student’s home Thursday, she said.

Glen Ellyn Deputy Chief Bill Holmer said police are interviewing the student in question and others “to get to bottom of what was going on.”

The student had the BB gun in his backpack and he or a friend may have taken it out to display, Holmer said. There were no threats.

Charges are possible but have not yet been filed.

Possession of a BB gun would likely be an ordinance violation, but there could be charges in the juvenile system if the student has a record, Holmer said.
