Police: Man killed after losing control of motorcycle in Crystal Lake

A 23-year-old man was killed Sunday night in a motorcycle crash in which police say he rode his motorcycle dangerously in Crystal Lake and eventually lost control of it.

According to a news release, Russell W. Janca of Alden was traveling northbound on the ramp to Route 14 from Route 31 when his 2006 Suzuki motorcycle hit the center median, became airborne and crashed into a 2002 Honda Accord at westbound Route 14 and Route 31 that was stopped at a red light. Police responded to the intersection at 7:19 p.m.

Janca, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead on the scene. Witnesses told investigators that Janca had been riding the motorcycle recklessly while traveling at a high rate of speed shortly before he lost control, police said. Witnesses also said Janca appeared to fall off the motorcycle as he lost control and hit the median.

Nobody else was injured in the crash, which remains under police investigation.

Alden is in unincorporated McHenry County, northeast of Harvard.
