See play ‘Glass Castle’ brought to life at ECC

The story of a young woman’s childhood growing up in a dysfunctional, yet uniquely vibrant family is depicted in The American Place Theatre’s Literature to Life stage presentation of “The Glass Castle” at Elgin Community College Saturday, Oct. 1. The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the ECC Arts Center’s SecondSpace Theatre, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Based on Jeannette Walls acclaimed best-selling memoir, “The Glass Castle” tells the story of the restless Walls family’s resilience, redemption and intense love. Told through Walls’ eyes, the memoir chronicles her family’s nomadic and precarious lifestyle that often left the young Walls and her siblings to fend for themselves.

Wynn Handman adapted and directed this Literature to Life stage presentation of Walls’ memoir. This one-person performance features Sarah Franek performing sections of the book verbatim and portraying upward of seven characters. A discussion follows the performance.

“The Glass Castle is part of The American Place Theatre’s Literature to Life series, which brings to life the world of important American literary works with performances that create an atmosphere of discovery and imagination. The Theatre, which is based in New York, has received more than 30 Obies, 16 Audelcos and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season.

This presentation of “The Glass Castle” is supported by Elgin Community College Student Life’s Co-Curricular Fund.
