Fremd dances to music of the last 50 years

As part of a yearlong 50th birthday celebration at Fremd High School, the Family and Consumer Science and Music Departments planned a retro fashion and music flashback party during September.

Each Wednesday, student and staff were invited to dress up in attire representative of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Both departments had students serve on a decorating committee in which they created, assembled and displayed items characteristic of the decade being celebrated that week, including memorabilia such as 45 RPM records, 8-track tapes, and cassettes. In addition, there were several photos exhibited depicting the era.

Students enjoyed listening to popular music between classes and in the cafeteria during lunch, all of which was compiled by the Fremd music department. The Family and Consumer Science Department held a staff and student fashion show during all lunch periods. Participants strutted their retro 80s wear to the amusement of the student body.

According to Family and Consumer Science Department Chair Christi Parsons, “I thought the various activities put on this month was a good way for students to see their teachers in a different light, as well as relive what their parents and grandparents may have experienced during their youth. It helped them connect past to the present.”

David Lang, Music Department chair, added, “I was absolutely amazed at the number of students who were familiar with the pop hits from the 1960s through the 1980s! Students and faculty went all out to dress up in the style of those decades and during passing periods, were literally ‘dancing’ to the music’ through the hallways at Fremd High School as they moved from one class to the next.”
