Dundee-Crown falls to Woodstock North
The losing streak for the Dundee-Crown Chargers continues.
The Chargers (0-6, 0-4) fell to the Woodstock North Thunder by a score of 25-6 at Dundee-Crown High School on Friday night. It was a quiet first half, with each team only scoring 6 points, but the Chargers couldn’t stop the powerful run game of the Thunder’s Ryan Wade in the second half.
“We played a good half, but we don’t know how to win,” said Chargers head coach Vito Andriola. “The program hasn’t learned how to win yet. We have a great first half, we drive the ball down then we miss a field goal and give up two good plays.”
The Chargers did have a productive run game themselves. Running back TJ Moss led Dundee Crown in rushing with 68 yards on 14 carries; while Ardian Asani had 54 yards rushing on 5 carries, and accounted for the Chargers’ lone touchdown. The Chargers, who lost their 22nd straight game, were forced to rely on the running game, with their starting quarterback Garret Ryan out with a shoulder injury. Running back Ben Sprouse took over at the quarterback position, but only attempted 3 passes and didn’t complete any.
In the third quarter, the Thunder (4-2, 3-1) added 13 points to their lead with a 34-yard reception for a touchdown by Jeff Taylor and a 3-yard touchdown run by Wade. Wade rushed for a total of 92 yards on 17 carries for the Thunder.
Woodstock North sealed the victory with one more touchdown in the fourth quarter. When the Chargers snapped the ball over the punter’s head on fourth down, the Thunder recovered the ball at Dundee-Crown’s 4-yard line and would eventually score on a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Brian Loftin.
“The kids battled,” said Andriola. “We’ve just lost so many in a row, and if something happens we go from a position where we don’t know how to react. It kind of got ugly there when we snapped the ball over the punter’s head.”
It won’t get any easier for the Chargers, as they will host Crystal Lake South this Friday in their final home game of the season.
“We’re going to keep working at it,” Andriola said. “We’ve got to be healthy. It’s going to be very hard. This was a game that we had a chance to win because we were physically able to compete. We’ve got three tough games coming up, so it’s going to be hard.”
