Faulty wiring cancels classes at Naperville North

A brief power outage Wednesday morning caused the evacuation of Naperville North High School and cancellation of all classes for the day.

Malfunctioning wires between a transformer and the building overheated at 8:50 a.m. and caused small amounts of smoke in the basement level of the school, Naperville Unit District 203 spokeswoman Susan Rice said.

“The smoke alarms were activated and the building was evacuated,” Rice said. “We were cleared for occupancy and had backup generators running power to our main systems by 9:30 a.m., but the decision was made to cancel classes as crews work to repair the wires.”

Rice said after-school activities and clubs also were canceled but classes are expected to resume Thursday morning.

“If for some reason the repairs aren't complete by then, we will have a larger generator brought in that can supply power to the entire school so classes can resume as usual,” she said.

Parents are asked to check the school's website for updates throughout the day before calling the school.
