Police: 1 dead, 1 injured in Waukegan gang shooting

Waukegan police are searching for the person who shot and killed an 18-year-old and injured a 13-year-old, officials said.

Cmdr. Gabe Guzman said in a news release that officers were called to Lincoln and Cummings streets about 9:30 p.m. Sunday with reports that shots had been fired.

Police found 18-year-old Edgar Gonzalez, of the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue in Waukegan, was dead, and a 13-year-old male teen from North Chicago was wounded but responsive.

He was taken by Waukegan fire personnel to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan for treatment of nonlife threatening injuries, Guzman said.

Guzman said police believe an unknown person used a handgun to fire multiple shots at the victims. The suspect then fled the area on foot, Guzman said.

The shooting appears to be gang related and the investigation is being led by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, he said.

“I personally met with the victim's parents last night at the scene and gave my condolences,” Waukegan Police Chief Daniel Greathouse said. “I also assured them that we will do everything we can to bring the offender(s) to justice.”
