Amtrak train from Chicago hits car in Miss.; 1 injured

TUNICA, Miss. — Authorities say one person was taken to a hospital by helicopter after an Amtrak train hit a car in north Mississippi.

Tunica County spokesman Larry Liddell says the collision happened Tuesday near the intersection of Pritchard Road and Mississippi Highway 3.

Liddell said one person was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. Liddell said the man was alert at the scene, but his condition was critical.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the train left Chicago on Monday night headed to New Orleans when it hit a vehicle that was “obstructing the track.”

Magliari said there were no injuries aboard the train and it would continue to its destination when authorities allowed it to leave.

Tunica County is a farming community and casino haven on the Mississippi River.
