Probation in Geneva skateboard crash

A 20-year-old Geneva man accused of hitting a skateboarder with his car in April was sentenced to two years probation, 100 hours community service and ordered to go to traffic school.

Ryan P. Rafacz, of the 700 block of Dobson Street, also must pay $216 in restitution, attend anger management counseling and can’t drive after 8 p.m. until he completes traffic school, according to court records.

Rafacz was initially charged with felony aggravated battery for the April 13 incident in the 800 block of Dunstan Road on Geneva’s west side.

He was accused of swerving and striking a skateboarder in the leg with his 2004 Ford Taurus, causing the skater to roll onto the hood of the car and then fall to the ground, according to court records.

Rafacz also was charged with criminal damage to property for breaking the victim’s $180 Arbor brand longboard, according to court records.

The victim injured his right shoulder, left leg and right hand but was not hospitalized, according to police reports.

The felony charges, which carried a top sentence of five years in prison, were dropped in exchange for Rafacz pleading guilty to reckless driving, a misdemeanor.

Rafacz’s defense attorney, Michael Garvey, declined to comment.
