Slain Naperville woman's brother extradited

The brother of a Naperville woman whose murder remains unsolved has been extradited from Florida to face identity theft charges, while police say he remains a “person of interest” in his sister's death.

Mark R. Lewis, 51, of Lakemoor, is being held at the Will County jail in lieu of $20,000 bond after months spent fighting extradition, according to court records.

Lewis was arrested on July 14 in a parking lot along the Gulf Beach Highway in Pensacola, Fla., about a month after his sister, Cathleen Lewis, was found beaten to death.

Naperville police decline to call Lewis a suspect in the murder but had been seeking to interview him about the slaying while he was being held in Florida.

Lewis is accused of identity theft and forgery involving his mother's bank account on June 7, a day before his sister was found dead at a townhouse she shared with her 83-year-old mother.

Police said they were “concerned” after Cathleen Lewis' death because family and friends did not hear from her brother for several days afterward.

Authorities entered him into a national law enforcement database, and he was arrested after someone reported him as a suspicious person. Lewis told officers that he was headed to a nearby naval base.

Lewis is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
