Petro, Hersey make a splash at BG

Hersey’s girls swimming team delivered a convincing performance in winning the Buffalo Grove Invitational on Saturday.

The Huskies finished with 515 points, nearly doubling runner-up Jacobs (280), who was followed by the host Bison (267.5), Cary-Grove (234), Prospect (224.5) and Conant (224).

Junior Amand Petro won the 200-yard freestyle in a pool-record 1:56.52 and also won the 100 free (54.59). She joined Erine Horne, Stefanie Kintzle and Kelsey O’Donnell on the winning 200 medley relay, and Petro joined Horne, Karolina Szymaszek and Kayla Dale on the winning 400 free relay in a pool-record 3:44.18.

Jessica Cavaiani was a double winner for Prospect. She won the 50 free in 26.13, topping Hersey’s Lena Fotos (26.55) and Rolling Meadodws’ Vicky Vockeroth (26.65), and in the 100 breaststroke, Cavaiani tied Dundee-Crown’s Colleen Champa for top honors in 1:08.65, just a couple of tenths of a second away from the state qualifying standard.

BG’s Margaret Lotzer won the 100 fly in 1:03.70, just ahead of O’Donnell and Vockeroth, and the Bison’s Sara Fasching won the 100 back in 1:01.38. The Bison also had the winning 200 free relay, with Veronika Jedryka, Lotzer, Callie Fasching and Sara Fasching.

Conant freshman Allison Cicero won the 500 free in 5:16.66, just ahead of Jedryka (5:17.98).

Prospect frosh Dana Liva won diving with a total of 374.10, just 3 points from the pool record for 11 dives, and ahead of Conant’s Haley Schuhl (282.45) and Bridget Waas (277.35).

Elk Grove Invitational: Hoffman Estates rose to the top of this eight-team meet, edging the host Grens in a close team race. The Hawks finished with 471, with Elk Grove at 457, followed by Niles North (284.5) and IMSA and Resurrection (245).

Sharon Sturnfield was a double individual winner for Hoffman, taking the 200 free and 100 free.

Elk Grove had a pair of double champs — Simona Kurta (100 fly, 50 free) and Angelica Ford (100 IM, 100 back). The Grens had the winning 200 medley relay (Ford, Monica Chonjacka, Kurta and Natalia Struk) and also the top 400 free relay (Jackie Hirschauer, Struk, Ford and Kurta).
