Chicago retail development getting disaster funds

A retail development on Chicago’s South Side is receiving $4.6 million in federal funding for road repairs and sewer infrastructure.

Illinois economic director Warren Ribley announced the funding Monday. It comes from money awarded to Illinois to repair damage from flooding related to Hurricane Ike three years ago.

The Pullman Park retail site will be anchored by a Walmart supercenter, which is scheduled to open in 2013. Construction started in July.

The infrastructure upgrades will strengthen and elevate a stretch of road that has continued to deteriorate after flooding from the 2008 storms.

Illinois received a total of $169 million in federal disaster funds under the Ike Recovery program to help 41 Illinois counties with their infrastructure and housing needs.
