Route 83 in Buffalo Grove shut down after car hits pole

A nearly milelong stretch of southbound Route 83 remained closed Wednesday evening in Buffalo Grove due to a damaged power line, caused by a single-vehicle rash, officials said.

A driver struck the pole near Pauline Avenue about 2:30 p.m., forcing crews to shut down the entire roadway between Buffalo Grove Road and County Line Road for close to four hours, said Buffalo Grove Sgt. Mike Rodriguez.

ComEd was at the scene working to repair the pole as of 7:30 p.m., but southbound traffic could remain closed past midnight, Rodriguez said.

“They are going to be working on the pole for up to six hours,” Rodriguez said at 7:30 p.m. “We are trying to figure out how to route traffic through.”

Fire department officials said the driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The pole was left hanging from the electrical wires.

The driver’s vehicle was damaged in the crash and towed from the scene, according to police.

It is not known if the driver will be cited upon release from the hospital.
