Waubonsie Valley knocks off Bartlett

It was not a pretty night for the Bartlett Hawks girls volleyball team on Tuesday.

The Waubonsie Valley Warriors defeated the Hawks two games to none at Bartlett High School. The Warriors played like the defending Upstate Eight Valley champions they are, winning by scores of 25-18 and 25-12.

Warriors’ head coach Kristen Stuart was very happy with her team’s performance.

“We’ve been working really hard in practice on attacking inside and having more diversified attacks,” said Stuart. “I thought we got good production from Lauren Lindell today, and more consistency from our hitters. Our attacking was consistent.”

Lindell put down 9 kills for the Warriors, while Lisa Stunicka had 8. Rachel Minarick had a team-high 12 assists while notching 5 kills and 3 aces, and Lauren Clarke led the Warriors in digs with 9.

Bartlett head coach Brandon Mueller knew how ugly the loss was for his team.

“I don’t think anything clicked for us today,” said Mueller. “I thought our girls were working hard; we’re just not executing at all, especially hitting-wise. We just put our heads down after a mistake and it’s just a funnel for us, one mistake after another.

“There was just no emotion on our side of the court, which is frustrating to see. I understand that Waubonsie Valley is a good team, but we’re better than the way we played tonight. They didn’t have to do much to beat us.”

There were some bright spots for the Hawks despite the tough loss. Lexie Mason hit the ball well, leading the team with 7 kills. Amy Hurban had a team-high 6 digs, while Tori Burke led the Hawks with 12 assists and notched 5 digs with an ace.

With the victory, the Warriors improve to 10-8 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They will host the Warrior Blast tournament on Friday and Saturday at Waubonsie Valley High School. With the loss, Bartlett falls to 7-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Hawks look to get back on track tonight against St. Charles East.
