Author Kenneth Green to tell his comeback story to Chicago and suburban audiences Oct. 23-26

Author/Attorney Kenneth N. Green was kicked out of Chicago's Roosevelt High School 58 years ago. Green, who wrote the book I'm From Division Street, will return to that school on October 24 and to three suburban locations on Oct. 23, 25, and 26 to tell how he made a comeback from poverty and academic problems growing up in Humboldt Park to his success as a defense attorney, chief of public defenders in Los Angeles County, boxer, and single parent of a son.

Roosevelt High School alumni can arrive at 11 a.m. on Oct. 24 and the program will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the school library. Roosevelt High School is located at 3436 W. Wilson Ave. The telephone number is 773-534-5000. He wants to inspire students to strive for success, despite their circumstances, focus on a goal, and to never use illegal drugs or alcohol.

He will also be speaking at:

• Congregation B'nai Tikvah, 1558 Wilmot Rd in Deerfield on October 23 at 7:30 p.m. following a dessert reception at 7 p.m.

• Hadassah North Shore Chapter, 3000 Dundee Rd., Suite 313 in Northbrook, at 7 p.m on October 25 in Northbrook.

• and at Lincolnwood Public Library, 4000 W. Pratt Drive, in Lincolnwood at 10 a.m. on October 26.

Green subsequently graduated from Roosevelt High School in January 1956. After serving in Korea, he attended Roosevelt University while working as a cab driver and cash register salesman. Subsequently, he moved to Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history and taught high school while going to law school at night. He became Chief of the Public Defender's Office in Los Angeles County, where he supervised 400 lawyers. He also was an adjunct professor at U.C.L. A, teaching paralegal classes. He also became an amateur boxer inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame. When he was 68 years old, he attended the Los Angeles County Police Academy and became a reserve police officer and conducted classes for police academy candidates. He also did pro-bono work as an attorney for low-income people in the Los Angeles. Kenneth Green and his wife, Maureen, live in Sherman Oaks, CA and have a condo in Chicago. He returns several times a year to Chicago to visit the old neighborhood and friends and to tell his inspirational story to at programs in the city and suburbs.

He is scheduled to be on the WGN-TV Channel 9 Midday News at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 25.

He will also be interviewed on Roberta Markbreit's Contempo program to be aired on Comcast Public Access Channel in November.
