Girls volleyball/Fox Valley roundup
Claire Spiewek, Cara Tyrell and Whitney Vanden Bos were all selected to the all-tournament team Saturday as Westminster Christian’s girls volleyball team won the program’s first tournament championship, capturing first place at the Warriors’ own invitational.
Westminster (11-4) defeated Harvest Christian in the championship match 25-18, 13-25, 25 — 15 after beating Elgin Academy, Kirkland Hiawatha and Mooseheart earlier in the tournament.
Spiewek had 40 kills, Tyrell 31 kills and Vanden Bos 36 digs to lead Westminster Christian.
Harvest Christian defeated Alden-Hebron and North Shore Country Day and split with Mooseheart before losing to Westminster in the final. Sydney Doby (13 blocks), Sarah Kott (6 aces), Shayna Manusos (6 aces), Erica Manusos (6 aces), Kaitlyn Floyd (54 assists) and Jade Martinez (12 digs) led the Lions.
At St. Viator: Larkin took 6th place in the 12-team St. Viator invite, beating Elk Grove and Von Stueben and losing to Conant, Immaculate Conception and Carmel. Lexi Smithberg, Olivia Kofie and Brianna Stewart led the Royals (8-14).
At Hersey: Elgin went 0-5 at the Hersey invite, losing to Schaumburg, Lake Zurich, Montini, Glenbard North and Hoffman Estates. Elyssa Helker (13 kills, 4 blocks), Hope Demel (34 assists, 12 digs), Monica Stockman (19 kills, 6 blocks), Briana Hamilton (15 kills) and Rachel Roth (48 digs, 9 aces) led the Maroons (3-19).
At Maine East: South Elgin went 2-3 at the Maine East invite, beating Maine East and Niles North and losing to Trinity, Maine South and Addison Trail. Ali Osborne (19 kills, 6 aces), Amanda Nadler (16 kills), Rachel Murray (23 digs, 6 aces), Sam Kummerer (15 kills), Bri Reum (15 kills) and Maggie Jakaitis (71 assists) led the Storm (5-8-1).
At Glenbard West: Streamwood went 1-4 at the Glenbard West invite, falling to Glenbard West, Northside Prep, Prospect and Rockford Guilford. The Sabres beat Morton and in that win, Hannah McGlone and Kelly Drwal each had 4 kills, Brittany Kemp 5 aces and Liz Simonelli 8 digs.
