Student's artwork on first District 116 calendar

Round Lake Area Unit District 116 didn't need an expensive consultant to create an eye-catching cover for its first calendar.

It was produced by Round Lake High School senior Lauren McLane, who was honored for her effort at a District 116 board meeting Thursday evening.

McLane created art for the calendar cover with geometric shapes that appear to be punctuated by light rays. Her art is positioned on the calendar's left side, with District 116's logo on the right.

“I want to be in graphic design,” McLane said after receiving kudos from District 116 Superintendent Constance Collins and board President Nanci Radford.

Rather than seeking an expensive consultant as some local governments do for logos and slogans, Collins' administrative assistant, Heather Bennett, contacted teachers in an effort to solicit student submissions.

Along with key names and telephone numbers of district officials, the 33-page calendar includes student-related information regarding attendance, discipline, achievement, safety and security.

“We always felt it would be better to give parents a single document with all the important information,” Collins said.

Collins said that based on the calendar artwork produced by McLane, she's “well on her way” toward her intended career in graphic design.
