Police defend officer who let impaired driver go

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Fond du Lac police are defending an officer who let an impaired woman drive away, only to be arrested about an hour later for drunken driving in another jurisdiction.

Police received a call about a woman driving erratically and hitting a curb with her two children in the car Sept. 6. A Fond du Lac officer pulled her over, cited her for inattentive driving and let her drive away.

More complaints were made to dispatchers about the woman’s driving and she was pulled over again, this time by a Calumet County sheriff’s deputy. She failed a field sobriety test.

Fond du Lac Police Capt. Steven Klein tells The Reporter (http://bit.ly/qXOjdb ) the first officer who stopped the woman did nothing wrong because there were no signs the driver was intoxicated.
