Fire does near $350,00 damage to home near Naperville

A garage and nearby back porch were completely destroyed in a fire Thursday near Naperville Township.

The blaze, which appears to have started in the garage, broke out after 2 p.m. on the 30W 500 block of Sunrise Road, located south of Ferry Road, west of Route 59, and north of Interstate 88.

The homeowner was painting the side of his house when he discovered the fire, according to Battalion Chief Steven Malatia of the Aurora Fire Department.

The fire engulfed the porch and spread to the exterior of the house, but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it caused more serious damage to the house.

Damages were estimated at $250,000 for the garage, $75,000 for its contents, and $18,000 for a vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Since the fire was in an unincorporated area without nearby hydrants, firefighting crews had to create a “relay” with three engines to get water from a hydrant on Ferry Road, Malatia said.

However, that water source was used later, after most of the fire had been extinguished by use of a fire engine with a 750-gallon capacity water tank, he said.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known, and officials continued to investigate on Friday.

Naperville Township contracts with Aurora to provide fire protection services for that area. Crews from the Warrenville Fire Protection District also responded to assist.

One bid not enough for Lombard accessibility project
