City Informs Residents of Northeast Minnesota Wildfire Smoke Spreading Into Area

The City of Naperville informs residents that smoke from a large wildfire in northeastern Minnesota has moved into far northern Illinois, including the Naperville area, this afternoon. Children, the elderly, individuals with respiratory and cardiac problems and anyone engaged in strenuous outdoor activities for a prolonged period of time should use caution while outdoors.

The City has received several reports from residents regarding a haze seen in the area and associated respiratory problems.

The Pagami Creek Wildfire is located more than 400 miles northwest of the Chicago area in northeast Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Smoke from this more than 60,000 acre fire has been able to move into northern Illinois due to northerly winds behind a cold front that moved across the area earlier today.

According to the National Weather Service, smoke will likely persist through the afternoon and into the overnight hours before weather patterns shift. Residents can expect hazy skies and a distinct burning odor.
