Grayslake students make pinwheels for peace

Grayslake Middle School students made their own 9/11 statements on Friday. Each one made a Pinwheel for Peace, which were then arranged in the shape of a giant #8220;peace#8221; sign in the grass outside the school. The idea comes from #8220;Whirled of Peace,#8221; and the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21, but the focus at Grayslake Middle School was on doing it as a remembrance of 9/11.

The students reflect and write their thoughts about war, living in peace, and tolerance.

The project also features anti-bullying and living in harmony with each other themes on one side of the pinwheel, with their visual feelings on the other.

Chris Kocher, art teacher, said students put the pin wheels together on Thursday, and on Friday they went outside and placed them in a giant peace sign in the grass.

The last half-hour of the school day, the whole school will walk and circle the peace sign and have music playing related to peace.
