Kaneland may extend superintendent’s contract

The Kaneland school board Monday will consider extending the contract of Superintendent Jeff Schuler.

The superintendent’s contract expires at the end of the 2012-13 school year. With the extension, it would expire at the end of the 2016 school year.

“We are confident in his leadership, so much so that we want to extend our relationship with him. ... We think very highly of him,” board President Cheryl Krauspe said Friday. She said it was the board’s idea to extend the contract now.

Schuler would receive a 3 percent raise, to a salary of $158,525, in the first year. His annual annuity would increase 10 percent to $11,000. Those increases were part of his current contract.

Salaries and annuity payments for the remaining four years would be determined annually by the school board.

Under the proposed extension, Schuler is expected to make sure the district accomplishes several academic and fiscal goals.

It sets percentage goals for students’ scores on standardized tests, including the Illinois Standardized Achievement Tests, in several subjects. It also sets a goal of having 60 percent of high school students take at least one Advanced Placement course.

The proposed contract also calls for Schuler to work on making sure no more than 5 percent of certificate-bearing staff members leave each year to work in similar positions elsewhere.

Schuler became superintendent in 2010, following the retirement of Charles McCormick.

The board will also conduct a public hearing on the district’s 2011-12 budget, then vote on it. The budget can be viewed at kaneland.org.
