Ÿ The Dino’s grocery store in the 400 block of Summit Avenue that was damaged in a fire earlier this week was burglarized overnight Wednesday by people who apparently gained access to the building through a temporary roof. Police said sometime between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. Thursday, thieves broke into the store and stole 70 cartons of cigarettes, an unknown amount of cash, 10 cases of liquor and international calling cards. Police said entry was gained by removing boards that were holding down tarps covering plywood that had been nailed to the roof.

Ÿ A 59-year-old Elgin woman was arrested Thursday with misdemeanor retail theft after stealing various personal items from the Meijer Store at 815 S. Randall Road, a report said. Police said Josefa Bonilla of Spruce Lane, had taken nail polish, hair pins, PediaSure and lip balm valued at $51.21. Bonilla was released on a $160 bond and is due to appear in Elgin Branch Court t 9 a.m. on October 7.

Ÿ Elgin and Illinois State Police are looking for a trailer hauling thousands of pounds of scrap metal after it failed to arrive at an Ohio facility last week. Elgin police said the vice president of Industrial Metals Recycling Corp, John O’Brien, said a driver picked up 43,993 pounds of scrap brass valued at $126,436 from the company and was hired to take the material to Concast Metal Products in Birmingham, Ohio. The truck did not arrive on the expected date of Sept. 2. The tractor number is 709 and the trailer number is 53024.

Ÿ Someone stole a red Troy-Built lawn mower from in front of a house on the 900 block of Brook Street between 3 and 3:15 p.m. Thursday. The owner said he stopped working on the lawn about 3 p.m. and went inside for a beer. When he returned to the yard 15 minutes later, the lawn mower was missing.

Ÿ Someone broke into two vehicles in a parking lot on the 1000 block of Byron Lane. The victim told police items including school books, an electronic translator and women’s sunglasses were taken from a 2001 Toyota 4runner and a 2007 Mazda 3 on Wednesday night.

Ÿ A 58-year-old Elgin man was arrested on charges of retail theft after walking out of the Walmart store on Randall Road before paying for about $140 worth of merchandise, a report said. Eddie Hill of the 1100 block of Spruce Lane was caught placing items into Walmart bags before exiting through the store’s lawn and garden department, the report said. Stolen items included a Memorex CD player and clothing. Hill posted $150 bond and will appear in Elgin Branch Court at 9 a.m. Oct. 21.

Ÿ Someone stole a silver boy’s Tony Hawke BMX bike valued at $170 from an open garage on the 500 block of N. Melrose Ave.

Ÿ Someone broke seven windows on a home in the 37W0-99 block of Huntley Road near Carpentersville between 10 a.m. and 11:03 p.m. Wednesday, sheriff’s police said.
