Bettendorf Castle trial to start next month

The owner of Bettendorf Castle in Fox River Grove will get his day in court next month to argue that he should be allowed to host tours on the property.

Fox River Grove officials say the village code does not allow bus tours in residential areas. Castle owner Michael Strohl was issued a zoning ordinance violation notice Aug. 10 after a group of people came by bus to visit the castle at 418 Concord Ave.

On Thursday, Strohl pleaded not guilty in McHenry County Court and a bench trial date was set for Oct. 13. Strohl’s attorney, Robert Hanlon of Woodstock, said he will “vigorously defend” Strohl’s rights. He declined further comment.

Residents of Concord Avenue have opposed allowing tours at the castle, citing traffic and safety issues. In March, Strohl withdrew an application for a zoning change to allow tours and other events at the castle. A previous tour bus made a stop at the castle July 14, and residents complained to the village.

Bettendorf Castle, built between 1931 and 1967, will receive a plaque from the historic sites committee of the McHenry County Historical Society during a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, said Grace Moline, committee chairwoman. The event is by invitation only.

This will be the 83rd site to receive a plaque by the society since 1983, Moline said. The Strohls contacted the organization over the winter, and a site visit was done in May, she said.

To receive a plaque, buildings must be at least 50 years old, have local historical significance, architectural significance and be well-maintained, she said.

“Our purpose is to promote preservation,” Moline said.
