‘Ruse’ burglary warning:

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is warning homeowners of “ruse” burglaries. Local municipalities and county sheriff’s offices have received an increase in burglaries that occur during the late morning and afternoon hours, before 5 p.m. Victims are targeted because of their advanced age and the probability they are living alone. Offenders typically work travel in pairs, with one distracting the homeowner while the second enters the home through a second entrance to search and steal cash, jewelry and other items. Storylines include inquiries about the homeowner’s water supply or pressure, and offers of home repairs. Officials warns that no solicitor should be allowed inside your home without a scheduled appointment, if a solicitor comes to the residence, make note of the vehicle they are driving, their attire and physical characteristics, and never leave the front door when speaking to a solicitor. Anyone who feels they have been a victim or if you have seen suspicious vehicles and subjects approaching elderly neighbors, call the sheriff’s office at (847) 549-5200.
