Geneva church honors 9/11 with music

Many events and church services Sunday will mark the 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, but the 9 and 10:45 a.m. services at the United Methodist Church of Geneva should catch the attention of your ears.

Church music director Scott Stevenson, the cantata choir and chamber orchestra will present three movements of “Requiem 9/11,” with two of the movements titled for the times of the attacks — 8:46 a.m. and 9:02 a.m.

Of his debut piece, Stevenson said, “We wanted to create a service that would not be a display of civil religion, but an honest expression of remembrance and the desire for a more peaceful world order.”

Fifty singers will make up the accompanying choir, along with the 12-piece chamber orchestra.

Bracing for storm?: Seeing the former Ace Hardware store on the east side of St. Charles boarded up with wood makes it look like it is bracing for a hurricane. The storm that hit this business was the economy, yet DG Hardware is open on the east side at 2650 E. Main St.If you need those oddball-sized nuts and bolts or a bag of tiny screws head to DG or give them a call at (630) 377-2245.Hardware mentor: Speaking of hardware stores or, more specifically, the people who work in them, a reader sent a note saying he was glad to see Dean Clayton#146;s name come up in a story about the Geneva Hardware store closing only a few months after moving into the former Dominick#146;s building on the west side of St. Charles.#147;I worked with Dean in the hardware aisle in the 1980s at Seigle#146;s in St. Charles, and in recent years when I went to Ace Hardware in Geneva I would look for him because he was a great mentor to me,#148; Phil Kessler wrote in his email. Tweeter for tires: An auto tire shop is another business turning up fairly regularly on Randall Road it seems, and that#146;s what we#146;re getting at the former Tweeter electronics store at Christina and Randall in Geneva. A National Tire and Battery store will be taking up shop at that site. Some new looks: It#146;s not all about hardware and tires around town. Geneva has welcomed a few new downtown stores, and the remodeling makeover in places like Geneva Running Outfitters and Morrison Galleries are garnering attention. We won#146;t forget: In Sunday#146;s column, I#146;ll look back at how we were reacting in the Tri-Cities area in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks #8212; recalling how we came together and what it was like to suddenly live in a world of heightened security. dheun@sbcglobal.net
